By the first week of next July, the capital city of Riyadh will welcome more than two thousand players from around the world to compete in one of the biggest global esports events, as all eyes turn to the Esports World Cup (EWC).

While this massive global stage did not always exist in its current scale, the rapid growth of investments in Saudi Arabia’s gaming and esports sector has transformed the Kingdom into one of the world’s leading destinations for competitive gaming, with a clear ambition to become the global capital of esports in the near future.

A Global Championship With Unprecedented Scale

This year’s Esports World Cup features more than 24 different titles, including global hits such as League of Legends and Tekken, alongside massive prize pools reaching up to $75 million USD. The event brings together dozens of teams and players from various nationalities.

This reflects the Kingdom’s growing ambition, supported by increasing investments and international partners who believe in Saudi Arabia’s vision of building a global hub for esports and competitive gaming.

Regional Challenges and Event Continuity

Despite current geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the organizers of the tournament, led by Ralf Reichert, have confirmed that the event will continue as planned and is expected to grow even larger than previous editions, although travel and logistics challenges in the region have created some difficulties.

The Esports World Cup is not seen as a temporary event, but rather a long-term strategic project aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which includes over $1 trillion in investments across multiple sectors, including sports, entertainment, and digital industries.

Investing in Youth and the Future Economy

This strategy strongly focuses on empowering youth by creating new job opportunities, supporting training programs, and building a competitive ecosystem that includes global tournaments and esports development initiatives.

Although some international sports projects have faced delays or setbacks, the esports sector continues to expand rapidly, driven by strong investment and growing regional interest.

A Massive Market and Expanding Community

Gaming in Saudi Arabia represents one of the fastest-growing sectors, with over 23 million players accounting for approximately 67% of the population. Esports events have also attracted more than 3 million viewers in the past year alone.

These figures highlight the enormous economic and entertainment potential of the industry and confirm that the future of esports in the region is on a strong growth trajectory. Saudi Arabia aims to position itself as a global hub for an industry that includes more than 3.4 billion gamers worldwide.

Conclusion

In this growing momentum, the Esports World Cup stands as a cornerstone project in a broader vision to establish Saudi Arabia as a leading global destination for competitive gaming—bringing together players, developers, and investors under one unified platform.
